Zone Overview

Phato — Wetland Safari

Phato Zone occupies a unique ecological niche within Jim Corbett National Park — a mosaic of marshland, seasonal grassland and reed beds that creates habitat fundamentally different from the sal forests and chaur grasslands of the more famous zones. This diversity of habitat translates directly into a distinct and valuable wildlife experience.

The zone is perhaps best known for its spectacular birdlife. During the winter months (October to February), Phato receives significant numbers of migratory waterfowl and waders from Central Asia and Europe. Resident species include painted stork, black-necked stork, various egrets and herons, and raptors including Pallas's fish eagle and osprey.

Hog Deer — A Phato Speciality

Hog deer — a compact, stocky deer adapted to grassland and reed habitats — is far more commonly encountered in Phato than in forest zones. This makes Phato the best zone in Corbett for observing this relatively uncommon species.

Marsh Crocodile

The wetland areas of Phato support good numbers of mugger crocodile, which bask on exposed banks during the day. Sightings are reliable during the cooler months when crocodiles maximise basking time.
