Durga Devi Zone — Mountains & Rivers
Jim Corbett's most dramatic terrain — the northern zone where mountain rivers meet dense sal forest and the Himalayan foothills rise steeply from the park boundary. A spectacular and under-explored safari experience.
Durga Devi — The Forgotten Gem
Durga Devi Zone sits in the northeastern corner of Jim Corbett National Park where the Ramganga river and its tributaries drain from the Himalayan foothills into the park basin. The terrain here is fundamentally different from the grassland zones — dramatic, steep and heavily forested, with rivers cutting through boulder-strewn gorges.
The zone is far less crowded than Bijrani or Dhikala, making it prized among serious wildlife photographers and naturalists. Mugger crocodiles are a near-certain sighting along the Ramganga. The forests hold leopard, elephant and the occasional tiger. The Himalayan riverine habitat supports several bird species rarely found in other zones.
Himalayan Birdlife
Durga Devi is a birdwatcher's zone of the highest order. Species regularly encountered include the crested kingfisher, ibisbill, brown dipper, plumbeous redstart and numerous Himalayan flycatchers. During migration seasons, the riparian corridors see extraordinary avian diversity.
River Ecology
The rivers in this zone are pristine mountain streams — clear, cold and fast-flowing. Mahseer fishing was historically practiced here before the park's establishment. Today, the river system attracts mugger and gharial crocodiles, otters and an abundance of waterbird species.
